About Hortonville High School:
Hortonville Elementary School is part of the Hortonville Area School District in Hortonville, Wisconsin. In this rural area, the typical P.E. class size is 22 students. Students are in grade levels 1-4 and currently use Polar E30s, E200s and E600s along with the TriFit620. Hortonville Elementary received NASPE STARS Level 2 Recognition in 2005.
Core Activities:
Cheryl uses a variety of fitness and lifetime activities including rollerblading, frisbee, and golf, to teach P.E. at Hortonville Elementary School.
Using Polar:
The P.E. budget combined with district funds and grant money provided the funding for Polar technology at Hortonville. After hearing Beth Kirkpatrick speak as well as attending the technology workshops in Fargo, North Dakota, Cheryl was able to implement Polar products in her school. Cheryl uses HRMs in her lesson plans for one week every month. For Cheryl, the most important reasons to use Polar in P.E are for "student safety and immediate and accurate feedback to students."
The Buzz:
Cheryl likes "providing my students with accurate, immediate, and objective feedback regarding exercise intensity."
Students were "fascinated with the technology as well as manipulating their heart rates by varying type and intensity of activity."
Administration "appreciates that students are exercising safely."
Personal Highlight:
"Students are very motivated by the technology. I have also seen tremendous improvement in their level of understanding of exercise intensity and appropriateness. Students have engaged in some incredible discussions regarding heart rate information, physical activity, etc."
