About Hortonville High School:
Hortonville High School is part of the Hortonville Area School District in Hortonville, Wisconsin. In this rural area the typical P.E. class size is 26 students. Students are in grade levels 9-12 and currently use Polar E200s and E600s along with the TriFit620. Hortonville High is a NASPE STAR SCHOOL.
Core Activities:
Marcia does a fitness unit using the heart rate monitors (HRMs). All students are tested at the start and finish of each semester. Students analyze the results of the workouts, identifying which activities were the most beneficial. Marcia uses NASPE and state P.E. standards in her classes, and focuses on the 5 components of fitness.
Using Polar:
A PEP Grant as well as a WAHPERD grant provided the funding for Polar technology. Hortonville uses HRMs in P.E. classes and cross country practices. Marcia uses HRMs in her lesson plans once every ten days. For Marcia, the most important reason to use Polar in P.E is for students to identify their healthy heart zone and as well as strengths and weaknesses using the TriFit system.
The Buzz:
Marcia likes how "students can identify heart healthy activities; they enjoy using technology and receiving a print-out of their workout."
Students enjoy "testing with TriFit because they try very hard to improve their scores."
Administration, Parents, and Teachers, like "the fact that there is written documentation on test results and parents have an information sheet explaining the results of the test."
Personal Highlight:
"After using HRMs and the TriFit system along with changing our curriculum to focus on fitness and lifetime activities, our students' scores on the pacer improved from 39% in 2000 to 73% in 2002 in the healthy heart zone. Students also improved on the strength and flexibility test during the year."
