School: Sunset Ridge Middle School
Teacher: Wyatt Bentley

About Wyatt:
Wyatt is the P.E. and Health Chair at Sunset Ridge. He’s been teaching for four years and has been using Polar technology for the last year. He is a member of AAHPERD.

About Sunset Ridge Middle School:
Sunset Ridge is part of the Jordan School District, in West Jordan, Utah. In this suburban area the typical P.E. class size is 40 students. Students at Sunset Ridge have been using heart rate monitors (HRMs), the TriFIT system, and PE Manager for one year. They use HRMs in class 2-3 times each week.

Core Activities:
Wyatt uses the five elements of fitness: muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, body composition, and flexibility to teach physical education at Sunset Ridge.

Using Polar:
A PEP Grant provided the funding to get Polar technology for Sunset Ridge students. According to Wyatt, the most important reason to use Polar in P.E. is “To help students enjoy exercise while learning the benefits of it.”

The Buzz:
Wyatt likes how “immediate feedback and self monitoring of the students motivates students more than anything I can do. Kids love the technology and are excited to use it.”
Students “love to see how hard they are working, and Polar technology gives them the chance to get that information quickly without losing momentum during their workout.”
Administration likes that “the kids are more active and our school is now aligned with research that shows that healthier kids perform better academically. Additionally, a fitness based curriculum does not exclude any student due to lack of skill.”
