Integrating fitness into skill development

Philosophy

Physical education is a make or break time regarding a student’s development of positive physical activity habits. 2. Be informed, stay on the cutting-edge
  3. Communicate
  4. Focus on health and fitness

Class management

“The journey is more important than the destination”

Introductory Activities

Four sides- Students perform various locomotor movements on each side of the boundary line. Four different activities, such as walk, jog, skip, slide, gallop, etc.

High Fives- Students perform locomotor movements while music is playing; give high fives to classmates when it stops. Can add variations such as low fives, high tens, low tens, etc.

Meet Me in the Middle- Partners jog back and forth to middle of gym a do high fives, high tens, etc.

Jump and Jog- Partners split up, one jumps rope in the middle or performs jumping jacks while their partner jogs around the perimeter.

Partner Duck, Duck, Goose- Partners tap each other on the shoulder alternately saying, duck, duck, duck, the partner that says goose runs tries to run to their end line without being tagged.

Indy 500- Have students stand in a circle. Number off by 4’s, 5’s or 6’s. Call out a number, all students that are that number race one lap around the circle.

The Freezer- Give selected students either a blue, red and yellow beanbag or deck ring, Blue is the freezer, Red is the Defroster, Yellow is the Stinger. This is a tag game. The freezer is trying to freeze all classmates, the defroster is setting them free and the stinger is trying to tag the defroster. Choose 2-3 defrosters at a time.

High Rollers(groups of 2)- Students each roll one die(dice) into a hoop, the higher number chases the lower number to a designated spot. Points can be scored if the tagger catches the runner.

War(groups of 2)- Students deal out an entire deck of cards, which are placed face down, cards are turned one by one. High card chases the low card to the designated spot. Specialty cards are the face cards. Partners each perform the designated skill according the number on the second card. If two faces are turned up, choose one activity of the two ten times.

Tunnels(whole group)- Designate two different groups, one group will begin in down position, the other group is up. Down students perform a body balance activity while the other group jogs and crawls under.

Fitness and Skill Enhancing Activities

Dog Pound- Dog catchers roll balls at dogs while performing a variety of locomotor movement activities. Dogs that are hit go the pound to perform fitness development activity.

Musical Spots/Hoops- Student move to spots/hoops randomly placed around floor. Moving on signal, stop and perform various balance stunts on the spots or in the hoops.

Crazy Cones- Students set up or tip over cones as they move around the gym floor.

Crazy Cups- Students play crazy cone but up stack and down stack 3 or 6 stacks of Speed Stacks stacking cups as they move.

Continuous kickball (Bonkerball)- Students are involved in multiple, small-sided games using kicking, fielding and throwing skills.

The Circulation Game- Students play the role of a red blood cell, moving on red and blue lines (arteries and veins), through the heart and lungs to various body parts. Students exchange oxygen for carbon dioxide after performing an activity focused on that body part.

Upper Elementary Activities-Sport Skills

Basketball

All class keep away- Each student dribbles a ball while trying to knock balls away from classmates.

Four Corner Keepaway- Four students form a square with a fifth player standing in the middle. Players try to keep the ball away from the player in the middle. The middle player can get out of the middle 3 ways, interception, ball hits ground (last to touch it is in) or if they tag the person with the ball.

Team Hoop Guard- Teams try to get a koosh ball into the oppositions hula hoop. Player may not run with the ball. The ball changes possession when it hits the ground or is intercepted.

Football

Ultimate Football- Played like ultimate Frisbee with footballs. You may vary format, i.e., students may run with ball, use flag belts, etc.

Hockey

Super Sideline Hockey- Two teams spread out on opposite sidelines. Select half of each team to be active players on the floor, the other half are sideline players. The sideline is the goal line, active players pass to the sideline players. Sideline players shoot the ball (puck) across the other sideline. Use multiple balls or pucks so all players are active and developing skills.

Mass Hockey- Two teams, one goal and goalie for each team. Use 6-8 balls or pucks. Change goalies every 2 minutes.

Soccer

6 Ball Soccer- This lead up game is played like actual soccer using 6 balls. The entire class plays on the same field, 2 goalies per team, switch goalies every 3 minutes.

Knock off soccer- Player play regular soccer, but try to knock a whiffle ball off of a poly spot to score points.

Softball

Alaskan Softball- Divide teams into 5-6 players each. The batting team hits the ball into the field of play and the batter runs around his/her team as many times as they can until each player on the fielding teams has touched the ball.

Track & Field (Cross Country)

Magic Marker Mania- Spread a number of cones throughout the playing area and hide different color magic markers under some of them. Have students get into teams of 3 and give a small scrap of paper to one of the players, this player is the captain. On the signal, players run and look for markers, only the captains may touch the markers. Once all of the colors are marked on the paper by a team, the entire team reports to the instructor to have their sheets checked for accuracy. The second round is an individual activity where each student has his or her own sheet and plays the game independently.

Volleyball

Volley Up- (PE Central Challenge www.pecentral.com)-Students get into groups of 3. The object is to keep a ball going with 10 consecutive hits, each player must touch the ball twice.

No look Volleyball-
Clothespin shower curtains to the net so player cannot see on the other side. Use trainer volleyballs or beach balls to practice skills on getting the ball back over the net.
