Objectives:
- Students will increase activity and awareness of HR during their BB unit.
- Students will place a balanced emphasis on HR and baskets scored.
- Students will utilize HRM basketball score sheet to determine total team points.
Students install HRMs at start of class.
Intro: Use Line Tag on the Basketball courts as a warm up activity and to allow students to check the function of their HRM. Students spread out on the BB court lines and four students have a marker to identify them as it. On your command, student must move around the BB court lines similar to a train or trolley. Passing may only take place at the half court circle, and Key areas where lines split to allow mergers.
After two minutes, stop the game and check heart rate. Remind them of their goal of staying in the TZ (Target Zone). Select four new students to be “it” and play at least two more rounds. Class should be split to allow two teams to use one court(this helps to avoid traffic jams).
Lesson/Activity: Once watch function is confirmed, students will reset watch before the start of the regular basketball game. Bring all teams in and explain the score sheet for HRM BB. All teams take positions on their assigned courts and with a count down, simultaneously start their watches and begin their game. While they are playing basketball, the HRM is recording minutes that the students are “In the Zone”. After a 10 min, game, Have students stop and fill out their team card (see sample below). A new game can then be assigned.
Points can be totaled within a single game, day, or even the complete unit. This balanced approach allows everyone to be an active contributor to the teams total even if they are less skilled in basketball. If there continues to be an overly strong emphasis on scoring baskets, greater emphasis on the activity part can be accomplished by counting only the minutes “In the Zone”.
